Two cities sit astride the mouth of the Douro River in northern Portugal: Vila Nova da Gaia and Oporto - or Porto, as the Portuguese call it.


In Vila Nova da Gaia you find the port houses. These are the buildings - some almost as old as the port trade itself - which house the cellars, blending rooms and offices of all the major port producers. The two cities are thriving and vigorous, in fascinating contrast to the Baroque architecture and sculptures that abound.
