Before roads and tanker trucks, the young port was ferried from the Douro Valley to Vila Nova da Gaia by boats called barcos rabelo. The trip, through plunging rapids and heart-stopping drops was arduous and dangerous. Many boats and drivers didn't make it, but the wine often did because the barrels floated.

In this program, Tony Aspler discovers one of the last barcos built the old-fashioned way, entirely by hand. He was also on hand for the annual race of these ancient boats that celebrates the annual trek down the river.
